Papakōwhai Shared Path
JFC was engaged to construct a new shared pathway as part of the Government’s Transport Choices programme, an initiative led by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to support low-emissions, climate-resilient transport options. This project aimed to encourage greater use of walking, cycling, and public transport by delivering safe and accessible infrastructure for active travel. JFC’s innovative approach to using air vacuum for excavation added to the success of the project and further respected the project’s values around the environment. Careful planning and coordination were central to the project’s success, with construction staged to minimise disruption to road users, residents, and local businesses throughout delivery.

The scope of works consisted of the following:
Identification, protection, and adjustment of existing underground and overhead services
Electrical ducting and installation of new street, pathway and pedestrian lighting
Installation of new stormwater drainage and minor retaining structures with supplementary safety fencing
Construction of a new concrete shared-use pathway, will full kerb and channel reinstatement
Construction of new raised speed tables at side streets off Papakowhai Road
Carriageway reinstatement, pavement marking, signage, and integration of wayfinding elements
Soft landscaping
