Kelly Tarlton’s Rockfall Protection
JFC was engaged by Auckland Council to deliver rockfall protection and slope remediation works adjacent to Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium on the Tamaki Drive coastal corridor. The project involved stabilising an active coastal cliff environment through talus removal, rockfall risk mitigation, slope reinforcement, drainage improvements, and construction of engineered rock catch infrastructure. The works were carried out within a constrained public environment containing significant Pōhutukawa trees, ecological values, resource consent requirements, and ongoing public access considerations, requiring close coordination between geotechnical, arboricultural, ecological and environmental specialists to deliver a long-term rockfall protection solution while maintaining full compliance with Auckland Council consent and environmental requirements.
The scope of works consisted of the following:
Removal and disposal of approximately 180m³ of accumulated talus and slip debris from behind existing rockfall catch fences
Formation of access tracks along the toe of the cliff to facilitate remediation and ongoing maintenance
Maintenance, repair and partial replacement of existing rockfall catch fence infrastructure
Construction of engineered rock catch bunds to intercept and contain future rockfall material
Installation of slope stabilisation measures, including approximately 550 slope anchors and 260m² of reinforced turf matting
Construction of subsoil drainage systems, including Novaflow drainage pipes, drainage aggregate and stormwater outfalls
Installation of rip-rap scour protection and stormwater energy dissipation structures
Erosion and sediment control measures, including stabilised site entrances, silt fencing, catchpit protection and clean-water diversion bunds
Root investigations, tree protection measures and arborist oversight to safeguard mature Pōhutukawa trees
Delivery under resource consent conditions, including ecological, archaeological and environmental management requirements
Management of public interfaces adjacent to Tamaki Drive, public walkways and Kelly Tarlton’s visitor facilities, including temporary fencing, traffic management and controlled work zones
