Delivering Waitematā Station Plaza ahead of City Rail Link Opening
Introducing Waitematā Station Plaza – a newly upgraded public space delivered ahead of the opening of the City Rail Link (CRL) later this year.
In partnership with Auckland Council, JFC reconstructed the plaza between Tyler Street and Galway Street. The project included new paving throughout the plaza and Tyler Street, 8 new in-ground tree pits for the recently planted native trees, and power and stormwater upgrades. Several public amenities have been added, including bespoke seating, cycle racks, drinking fountains, and improved lighting. At the centre of the plaza stands a new artwork designed by Graham Tipene, a skylid formed by two 15-tonne precast elements that required extensive engineering coordination and rigging to complete the installation.
“One of the more unique challenges on this project was delivering the works on top of a live train station roof, which required rigorous methodology reviews to limit loading on the station. It was a real team effort, and we’re genuinely proud of what we achieved together.” – Deon, JFC Project Manager
We are excited to hand this revitalised space back to the community for people to gather, pass through and make it their own.
