The project had many design objectives to be met, including retaining and enhancing the Square as the city's urban oasis. The upgrade followed closely behind the restoration of St Patrick's Cathedral, and was described as complementing the restoration, and "creating a much needed sanctuary of peace in the heart of the city". The St Patrick's Square project was awarded the George Malcolm Supreme Award at the 2010 New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects Resene Pride Awards.
